Wow! I just watched the movie (new version )- "The Manchurian Candidate " and there is a great example of covert and overt incest it between the son and mother characters. Has anyone else seen the movie?

I haven't seen it. But since you mentioned it contains an example of overt and covert, I'll have to go rent it.
I'll let you know what I think.

Hi wildlavender,
I finally had the chance to see the Manchurian Candidate last week. You're right about the Meryl Streep character; she is a covertly incestuous mother all the way. Calling her son all the time and controlling every aspect of his life. Even having implants put in him so he could be this "perfect" son for her.
There is this one really disturbing scene in the movie where she is drying him off with a towel, and it almost looks like she is about to you-know-what. Ick.
As for the story, I don't know how believable it is. Seems pretty far-fetched for something like that to happen.
Has anyone seen the original? How does it compare to the remake?

I haven't seen the entire new version, but the old version is practically the definition of covert incest.
I'm glad they open up the issue; I just wish they would have taken the extra step to address it directly. It sounds like the new version touches upon the CI in a more non-covert way (heh, heh). So there's progress for Our People!

I just finished watching the original version and it has references to both covert and overt incest in it. At one point the mother grabs her son and kisses him on the lips.
On the DVD, there is even a discussion between three of the principals of the film, and they talk about the incestuous relationship between the mother and son and how that was all in the book. It makes me want to go out and get the book.
We've often talked about how there needs to be a movie made about covert incest, but as it turns out, it already has! And not just one, but two movies based on the same story. I guess it's just that no one has really addressed the incestous part of it directly. Hmm, maybe I should write an article about that.

I think it was very well written. And the author is right on the money about these things. You see, not everything needs to be direct in stories as it is not always direct and clear in real life. The author wanted you to get the feelings and to think a bit. That is one of the signs of a good writer----he lets the reader do the work, come to the necessary conclusions. I think it is more satisfying that way. Writers that I read are always alluding to things in stories and it makes the story more complex and enjoyable. I like to be challenged, not have it all spelled out for me. The story or movie is not a lecture or workshop type of thing. Plus, it was there (the incest) sometimes on the surface of things and a lot hidden in a dream-like quality.
And, yes, Moriji, the story is believable and this has happened to victims that I have talked to that have unfortunately been abused by those in the science field /ritual abuse/experiments --etc. I used to be on a site pertaining to this kind of unbelievable brainwashing and covert controlling.
The military in the US has been involved in such things as having people believe that they have a devise in their bodies and by this power of suggestion, they (the so-called superiors) can have control over them. Much like the type of brainwashing children go through in abusive homes. But the US was interested in making the "perfect soldier". Former Pres. Clinton put a stop to much of this expermentation.
I went through much of this kind of subtle controls--the triggers (the ringing phone is one example) -- and now do you see how unbelievable this is to the general public? I can let you know where you can do more reading on this subject if you are interested. wildlavender
